Menial or Meditative

LDF x Jason Markk x Footpatrol

'Sneaker Cleaning Table'

I recently explored the 20th edition London Design Festival which is a collection of exhibits and talks about design that pops up all across London once a year. Of many exhibits and products, my enthusiasm for shoes and furniture drew me to the Jason Markk x Footpatrol 'Sneaker Cleaning Table' exhibit in Footpatrol London.

The table and accessories are designed in collaboration with London based design dup MENTSEN, East London ceramicists E.P.C and Studio Swade - an upholstery start up from North London. The table is designed with functionality and authenticity at heart, with style and simplicity the collection includes some lovely details including a ceramic bowl and bottle and padded knee pillow to make the cleaning process more comfortable.

The project imagines a table designed for shoe cleaning, the key feature being a removable top with an aluminium sheet to protect the ash timber from water and cleaning solution. The removable top also gives access to a large storage compartment.

However what I love about the design is its practicality for other activities as well, whether it's listening to vinyl or painting flowers the collection does a great job of bringing a sense of being present to any task. Shoe cleaning and cleaning in general is about as menial as it gets so taking the time to sit and breathe in your activity gives you the opportunity to enjoy life boring task and make them meaningful.

Great design is about bringing joy to life through objects and I think this table does a great job at that. This sneaker cleaning table doubles as a creative, mindful space.

The table is currently being raffled by Footpatrol on their Instagram.
